Auel’s third book in the ‘Earth’s Children’ series follows Ayla along her journey from being raised by a Neanderthal Clan to her on-going discovery of her own humanity.

She, along with the man she loves, Jondalar, leave the confines of her valley and set out to explore the surrounding area. The couple chance upon the Lion Camp of the Mamutoi and Ayla is once again to embark upon a journey she could never have imagined.

Auel does not disappoint fans, as she broadens and deepens the reader’s relationship with both Ayla and Jondalar; delving into their relationship with themselves, each other and Ayla’s newly-adopted family, the Lion Camp. A must read for all who have enjoyed the first two in the series

Auel’s second instalment in her Earth’s Children series picks up from the end of the last book. Ayla’s journey has only just begun and she soon realises that a ‘Death Curse’ can be a blessing. Her Cave Lion totem finds a second cave, and allows her to grow and expand her experience of humanity.

As well as following Ayla’s story, Auel introduces a second main character into the story, in the form of Jondalar of the Zelandonii. His Journey with his brother Thonolan leads him to things he never imagined possible; good and bad.

Again, another could-not-put-down book filled with fast-paced plot movements and dripping in gorgeous description. Can’t wait to read the third in the series.

Not for a long time have I read a book which I literally could not put down. However, since picking up this book on a whim, I was enthralled by the way Auel treats a difficult subject, totally immersing the reader into the life of the main character, Ayla.

Based in Upper Paleolithic Europe, the story revolves around the adoption of a Cro-Magnon child by a group of Neanderthals, who eventually accept her as one of their own. The story develops around Ayla’s journey of self-discovery and maturation. This is an excellent book and a must read for just about anybody.
